When my friend discovered his wife
Was not pregnant, he decided
To get a vasectomy. He was terrified
They might have another child
Since he was out of work and his wife
Had changed jobs. When they came
Over for dinner, my friend
Didn’t look well. We learned
He’d had the operation
That morning but didn’t want
To say anything. He ate little,
Turned gray, then green, got up
From the table, and ran
Down the hall to the bathroom.
His wife sighed and said
She was going to take him home–
He’d been like that all day.
As they backed down our driveway,
My wife and I agreed
We still owed them dinner.
We waved and hurried inside.
The wind cut us like a knife.
